Presidential Honours

When Jim Shaw took over in 2000, he was conscious of the fact that years of service as President were largely unrecognised by the Council. Therefore, during his term of office, Jim made sure that Past Presidents were honoured and, at this year’s Annual General Meeting, it was agreed that they be awarded Honorary Membership and given a small memento of their service.

In future years, this honour will be bestowed on the retiring President at the AGM but, on this first occasion, with seven recipients to cater for, it was decided to make it a bit special and bring everyone together at one time. Amazingly, all seven Past Presidents (spanning 30 years of service to the SAPC) joined the current Executive Committee at the Millennium Hotel in Glasgow on Tuesday 9 December.

The current President, Provost Ronnie Burns (Renfrewshire Council) highlighted the demands of the office and thanked all who had served, but particularly the Magnificent Seven who were present on the day.

He also led a minute’s silence remembering Past Presidents no longer with us, and also the Council’s first Honorary Member, John Kennedy, who died at the end of November.

Provost Burns presented each in turn with a certificate of Honorary Membership and a crystal bowl engraved with the SAPC logo, resting on a plinth bearing his/her name and period of service. The event concluded with Christmas lunch and the usual exchange of SAPC memories.
